Remote Session (due 6/8/06) School Climate

This blog is part of the remote assignment for Thursday, 6/8/06. It must be completed by 11:00 on Thursday morning.

Read the section in chapter 9 about school failure, it includes a section about school climate. Then, complete the following:
1. “Quote” two sentences from this section of the text that best describes the connection between school failure and delinquency (what is the relationship). Explain why you picked those sentences.
2. Next, think about your own high school experiences and the school climate in the school you attended. Answer the following question- Was the climate in your high school conducive to academic success or was it more geared toward academic failure? Explain and be specific about what made the climate either positive or negative (feel free to mention the name of the school).

1) Two quotes that best describe the connection between school failure and delinquency are " Children who fail at school soon feel frustrated, angry and rejected. pg 278" " School failure leads to psychological and behavioral dysfunction [. . .]pg 278"

The reasons why I chose these two quotes are because these two quotes best describe the reasons for drop out rates and the reasons for the misbehavior of children in the classroom which then puts a negative climate and difficult for those children who are doing well in school. This is in relation to delinquency because children tend to act out their aggression and anger through their behavior. If a child feels as if he or she can not progress in school the child will feel angry and begin to not care as much for his or her future. This will be the result of misbevior and disruption in the classroom and in communities.

2)During my school year in highschool, it was an enviornment that was difficult to learn and concentrate in class. It was geared towards academic success but because the school had very strict academic rules there were students who could not keep up and soon decided that they would not progress in this school which caused a disrupotion therefore made it difficult for me to follow along with the teacher. The testing every month that was a majority of your grade, numerous projects given throughout the week, assignments due, and the grading system for report cards made it very challenging and only few students could keep up which put pressure on the teacher, administation, and the students. The school that I attended was World Communications Charter School grades 6 through 12. It was apositive school for academics but negative towards handeling the disruptive children.

(Part 1) The truth behind school failure and delinquency lies between the quotes: "believing that they will never achieve success through conventional means, they seek out to find like-mided companions and together engage in anti-social behaviors", and "reduced self-esteem has been found to contribute to delinquent behaviors". (278) The logic behind these quotes are very relative, because they somewhat intertwine in theory. It is safe to say that the average person wants to be successful in life, but that process has to start somewhere. Getting an education is the ground for obtaining this everyday goal. In addition to receiving an education, one must believe that it is possible. If a delinquent does not have any moral support or guidance from someone of authority, the act of trying is pointless. If no one believes in them, how are they going to believe in themselves? Eventually, they stop believing, so they stop trying. Then, they realize that they are not alone. So, that is where friendships, peer pressure, and negative influences begin. The delinquents start to understand each other. They realize they have the same problems with the same issues; even self-esteem. Everyone in their life has experienced a low self-esteem moment, but it is not until then that those delinquents release their esteem frustrations on a juvenile act. To them, school is a place that makes them feel dumb, unwanted, not important; opposed to committing a delinquent crime. It seems as though that is their way of displaying emotion, but to each other.

(Part 2) Attending Cardinal Dougherty High School, I can honestly say that it was designed to start the mold for successful people. Out of 268 students in the 2005 graduating class, 98% went on to receive a secondary education. Even though the student/teacher ratio was about 27:1, teachers made individual time for the students to progress. The majority of the staff made each day interesting. We had fun, got through the class, and still understood the lessons at hand. I remember hating some of the rules given by the administration, but I will admit, they were prepatory. The worse was detention for lateness. It got on my nerves then, but I appreciate it now. It made me realize that compared to the real world, detention is something minor. Once I start work in a law firm, there is no such thing as detention, its write-ups, suspension, and termination. The lessons learned through high school was that education of any kind was important, but the more you obtain the better off you will be. Of course every institution has a negative route, but my school cared about the well-being of their students.

The two quotes that I felted best described what was in the text was "Redued self-esteem has also been found to contribute to deliquent behavior"(278)and Low-tracked students, from whom little achievement and more misbehavior are expected, tend to live up to to these often unspoken assumptions about their behavior(280).

The reasons for picking these two quotes was that I totally agree with them. I feel that if a child self-esteem is abused that they then will become to feel that they are worthless, and then feel no need to work to a higher achievement while in school.

During my high school years at Simon Gratz High, I feel that the school and the teachers were conducive towards academic success, but many of the students were not.Their negative actions and dumb thinking habits of most inner-city children made it hard to become successful at Simon Gratz and brought the school's population rate way down. When half of the school's children were listed as drop-outs or deliquents what mother/father would want to send their child/children there.

1)According to page 278," children who fail at school soon feel fraustrated, angry, and rejected. Believing they will never achieve success through conventional means, they seek out liked- mined companions and together angage in antisocial behaviors." Children who don't have good grades in school feel unhappy. As a result, many of them commit crime.

2) I graduated from kensington high school. My high school had a academic climate, and it had good teachers who helped the students. Also, my high school had good tutors who helped the students after school. Students who wanted to improve their skills could go to the tutoring center after school. Moreover, my school had good scholarships for graduating students . This scholarships motivated students to study.

From the readings, the following quotes describe the connection between school climate and deliquency. (1)"Both boys and Girls who perceive a positive school climate are less likely to manifest psychological and behavioral problems..." (2)"The schools norms should discourage negative actions such as bullying and discrimination"

I chose these quotes because they point a direct correlation between the school climate and deliquent behavior. Indeed it is true that schools that are not proactive in discouraging acts like bullying and racism contribute to frustration against the students that feel excluded. Racism is a negative concept and discouraging it from schools could prove helpful against deliquency. If one feels to be discriminated against due to race, they might even quit school with low self esteem and become available material for deliquent behavior.

Also, a positive school climate that is responsive to the needs of every student goes a long way to addressing the underlying problems of deviant behavior.Deliquents are people and addressing their needs is a good way of helping to salvage the situation.

2. My school climate was very encouraging and conducive to my academic success. In fact I can vouch for the school that it was primarily due to the kind of school climate that I had in my elementary and high school education that I was able to reach my current academic level. My school climate made sure that I had time for extra-curricular activities like sports and drama. I was able to use my skills in sports in combination with an average academic output to inculcate the kind of discipline that has guided me to this day.

Quotes....

1)"School failure may cause more damage to more affluent youth when their limited ability conflicts with their overinflated expectations." "School experience is the direct cause of delinquent behavior"

I choose these two quotes because they kind of reinforce each other. Take a 4th grader for instance, he is expected not only by himself but by his parents and teachers to be able to read on a 4th grade or higher level. However, this is not always the case in more than most situations especially in public schools. Many 4th grade students are only reading on a 2nd grade level which can make it hard for him to keep up and in time will become frustrating. He becomes frustrated because his teachers can't or won't give him the time and attention he needs to help develop his skills, frustrated because he can't even reach his own expectation(which may have far fetched in the first place) and he can't reach his parents expectations. This frustation can quickly turn into antisocial behavior and will eventually lead to him dropping out.

2)I attended South Philadelphia High School, who was known to have a bad reputation before there got there in 19??, but by the time I got there they had just started the pilot program for "The Business Academy" and in order to stay in the Academy you had to maintain a certain gpa or you would be dropped and sent to finish out the rest of your years in regular classes, so they had to be geared toward our academic success. The teachers we had always put our academic studies ahead of everything else including the business side of our learning and although there were students who could not keep up and wanted to drop out, I can honestly say that the instructors did everything they could to help those students who felt they couldn't cut it. As bad as some of the SPHS students were the teachers there did care.

"Another approach to improving the school climate is to increase educational standards.Programs have been designed to improve the standards of the teaching staff and administrators and the educational climate in school, increase the relevance of the curriculum, and provide law related education classes".

Educational standards are at a all time low. Children are not being interested about what is being taught. Attention spans are short it also could be the lack of a good diet. Children need that extra push to survive in the world and especially school. Without something to get their attention all else fails. It is difficult not knowing what the teacher is talking about when you are illerate. No testing available for the learning disabled. Children in urban cities are just clamped together in one big pot. The teachers have become babysitters instead of instructors. Some school teacher thinks its a job and a paycheck while children suffer through to find themselves. Delinquence is not threat to school because they are not in school. They became a threat to society then its a big problem. Most parents dont even know if their child has attended school that day until report cards finally make it to the house, by then delinquency is in full effect.

I went to Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia. I learned some things but not enough to go in the world and use. They hid the fact that education is number one and should be taking seriously. My parents told me to stay in school and it will pay off later, but who listens to their parent at the age of sixteen. Teachers were there to hold you until three o'colck and give you some papers that was called homework. You didnt know what it was you were getting because half the time the teacher was trying to get people to behave. I didn't learn much in that school even though I went there for four years. I didnt know that there were past participles and independent clauses. Walking around talking broken english for twenty years makes a person wonder. The world back then everything was masculine the seas, the hurricanes, and the storms. Today everything is turn around and you have to grip it or fall to the waist side.If I knew then what I know now I would have stayed out of the hallways a little bit more.

After reading the section in chapter 9 about school failure and school climate, I found two sentences that best describe the relationship between school failure and delinquency. The sentences I chose were 1.) School experience is a direct cause of delinquent behavior. 2.) School failure leads to psychological and behavioral dysfunction.

I chose the first sentence because it states directly the correlation between school failure and delinquency. When children go to school they are always are at risk or will engage in some type of delinquent behavior. It is natural for children to act out once in a while, but they eventually learn good behavior and bad behavior when in school. Children are sometimes influenced by other children to misbehave for attention and classroom status. (Class Clowns)

I chose the second sentence because not doing well in school does create a low self-esteem for children. Other classmates or parents may tease the child and call them stupid or retarded for not understanding their school work. The child has a hard enough time growing up understanding him/herself or why he/she has academic problems. Having learning disabilities causes frustration and carelessness in effected children. Their frustration and anger with themselves causes psychological and behavioral dysfunction, which develops into delinquency.

The climate in my high school was conductive to academic success. There were students at my high school from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, which created a stable, positive environment, and enthusiasm for learning. We all had a common interest in Agriculture. I attended WB Saul High school of Agricultural Sciences, which is a hands-on learning and experiencing school. We were engaged daily in activities of caring and handling large and small animals, floriculture, horticulture, turf grass and landscaping management, Agriculture mechanics, etc. We had several activities and clubs we could be involved in including the FFA.

"Children who fail at school soon feel frustrated, angry, and rejected." "Academic failure helps reduce self-esteem; studies using a variety of measures of academic competence and self-esteem clearly demonstrate that good students have a better attitude about themselves than do poor students."Those two quotes best describe the connections between school failure and delinquency.
I pick those two sentences because they're both true. Those two sentences are the reasons why deliquents fail in school. I don't believe just delinquents feels this way but every child in general.
My school was geared to academic failure because the principal focused on students wearing uniform then academic performance. For example, if a student didn't have the full uniform on the student was sent home.
