The difference between the latent trait theory and the developmental theory is that the trait theory is a stable feature, characteristic, property, or condition, such as defective intelligence or impulsive personality, that makes some people delinquency- prone over the life course. The developmental theory is the view that criminality is a dynamic process, influenced by social experiences as well as individual characteristics.
A person who may have problematic behavior would be a young child around the age of ten who has developed multiple personality disorder who lives in an enviornment with drugs, gangs, and poverty, that makes his illness worse than what it is. He has constant aggressive mood changes and becomes a problem in school with not following directions, and bullying other children. Because his father has multiple personality disorder the child has developed the disorder also. This can lead to delinquent behavior in the near future because of the age that he is at which is ten years old.
Information about these two trait theories are found in chapter five entitled Developmental Views of Delinquency in the book Juvenile Delinquency.

Developmental theorists believe criminality is a behavior that is influenced by social experiences and individual characteristics. For example an African American young male from the inner city, committed a crime by buying and selling illegal drugs. His behavior was influenced by his social environment, there are several people in his area who are buying and selling illegal drugs. Illegal drugs sales is a social norm where he lives, which influences him to not be as concerned about being caught as if he was in a more rural area.

Latent trait theorists believe criminality is caused from a suppressed emotional behavior, such as reacting off of impulses rather than thinking about the consequences of their actions. This suppressed emotional behavior is what makes some people more of a risk to criminal behavior than others. For example if a young male had anger management problems, he would have difficulty controlling his behavior. He may be involved in several physical fights to relieve his anger, rather than understanding he can’t resolve anything in a fist fight, he will only create more trouble for himself. The boy would have to go to anger management classes to learn how to control his impulsive behavior.

Latent trait means your are born with that trait at birth. To some you have no control over what you do.
Developmental theory means you learn it as life progresses.Although drugs and other social factors take part in that theory. Another view is you are born with a "Master trait" it tells a person what to think and how to act on certain things in life.

Carl is six foot three hundred pounds. He is the captain of the foot ball team. Although his life seems wonderful, when he goes home he is faced with a challenge that his parent is gay. One day while at school he is confronted by one of his team mates about his fathers sexuality. Carl goes completely wild and breaks the students nose. He is expelled and blames his father for his troubles. Carl doesnt see what he has done wrong. Alhough he was thrown out of school, Carl thinks that since he brke the other students nose it made him fell good despite the down fall of his career. He blames his parents for the whole situation and blocks it out of his mind. This is a major target for Carl to be a delinquent. To solve everything with his temper and hands.

the developmental and the latent trait theory are very much different. the developmental theory deals with a process that views onset, continuity, and termination of a delinquent career, which is influenced by social experiences as well as individual characteristics. whereas the latent trait theory deals with characteristic, property, and conditions that may make a deliquent prone to delinquecy over the course of life. the latent trait also states that people don't change, criminal opportunities change and that a unchanging master trait controls antisocial behavior.for an example young tyheed let his environmental influcences get the best of his brain function when begining to use drugs at a young age, because he was prone to drugs at such a young age he became problematic in school, then stopped attending.as a result tyheed is now in placement of a boys group home and is still establishing the behavior of a delinquent, and is now in danger of becoming a career criminal.

1) The main difference between developmental and latent trait is that latent trait a person disposition present at birth or established early in life, and it remains stable overtime. On the other hand, developmental theory is the view that criminality is a dynamic process, influenced by social experiences as well as individual characteristics. In another words, the main difference is the view of criminality as been stable or unstable.

2) Jean is 16 years old boy who lives in a peformatory school. When he was in middle school, he always fought with his classmates. On day, he injured one of the classmate very badly. This happened when he was 15 years old. he was had a very temper and he stabbed his clasmate with his pocket knife. After he stabbed his classmate, he did not feel any remorse, As result, his family and school sent them to the peformatory school. In the peformatory school Jean is learning, how to be electrician, so he does not have time to fight. I believe that Jean is a perfect example of the concept of latent trait because he always had a bad temper ever since he was very small.

Developmental and latent trait theories are interesting explanations to our understanding of juvenile deliquency. While both theories have similarities, they are significantly different.
The development theory explains juvenile deliquency as a function of the social, psychological and economic influences that serve as the basis for deviant behavior.Examples of such factors may include, poverty, low socio-economic status of the family, drug abuse and exposure to violence through the course of life.On the other hand, latent trait theory relates to psychosocial deficits like mental retardation, personality disorders, and anti-social disorder to name a few, that influences the juvenile's impetus to commit crime. In this theory, there is a master trait that controlS the impulse.
Furthermore, in developmental theory, people can change over the course of their lives but in latent theory, people do not change, only the opportunities for deviant behavior changes.

(B) Patrick Walsh is a seventeen year old boy diagnosed with low IQ,anti-social personality disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and aggressive acts.Several psychological assessments and psychiatric evaluations establish that he was genetically pre-disposed as a result of a family history of disorders. At his age, patrick still lacks the skills to fully and clearly express his feelings in a more traditional way to peers. He would rather shout, lash out at friends and curse and use obscenities in any situation that he was found to be uncomfortable with.Patrick is always involved in petty crimes. He has been arrested twice this month for shop lifting and stealing $2 from a grocery owner accross the street. When he was arrested, Patrick had little or no regret for his acts.A review of his case history from the police department and other social service agencies reveal that patrick's deviant behavior has been evident since he was four years old and that his behavior and methods have been consistent over time.

The difference between latent trait and developmental theories are based on the characteristics inherited early. Developmental theory is the view that criminality is a process that changes through social activity and individuality. Latent trait theory is the idea that everything performed is inherited through the parent after childbirth. Each characteristic could be the cause for an adolescent to become a delinquent.

Jessica Smith is 16 year old girl living in the "fast lane". It is difficult to understand why Jessica is the way she is because of the environment she was around. Being raised in a single family household, Jessica never had to worry about just making it. Even though everything at home is okay, she is still beyond rebellious. She constantly dates older men, she is hardly ever in school, she smokes marijuana daily, and she is always in the streets. In addition to her wild ways, she also had three abortions in four months and does not have any future plans. Her parent had enough of her out of control actions and set up an appointment for Jessica to see a specialist. After a few sessions, the specialist wanted to meet important people in Jessica's life the next time they met. So, the following session, Jessica brought her grandmother and a picture. During the session, the specialist was curious about the mysterious woman in the picture. It was then that Jessica and grandmom Katherine revealed valuable information. The woman in the picture was Jessica's mother, Jacqueline. Jacqueline died when Jessica was about six months old. She and Jessica's father were raising together ever since. Grandmom Kat then explained why Jessica was the way she was; her daughter was the same way when she was Jessica's age. Although, there was one difference. A few weeks after Jacqueline was ending her crazy lifestyle, she was shot and left for dead. Grandmom Kat wanted to leave that statement as a difference before it became a similarirty. It was not until then that Jessica wanted to change for the better. She wanted to be something her mother was not, alive.

Latent trait differs from developmental theory because Latent trait is a personal attribute or characteristic that controls the tendency to commit delinquent acts whereas developmental theory explains how one can become or commit delinquency based on the surrounding environment.

John Doe is a 25-year-old man who had a rough childhood. A single parent (mom) raised him. As child, John Doe lacked the presence of a male role model but his mother was not there for him all of the time. He had a thirst for love and affection he did not get from his mother. One day his mother decides to move after living in their home fro 13 years. John doe was devastated. By the time he reached high school, his mother was always working and never home. He found refuge in street friends where he learned to use drugs and that eventually led to selling them in school. The relationship with his mother did not improve. As a result, he did not care much for women. He cheated and coned his way to high school graduation. At this point, he wants nothing to do with his mother so he decided to join the military. After being a U.S. Marine for 4 years, he tested positive for drugs in his urine and received a dishonorable discharge. Because of his childhood and adult events, he has a record of domestic violence, drug abuse, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, and much more.

According to latent trait delinquency, people choose delinquency because of their genetic, physical & mental makeup along with the makeup of their environment and social structure. If any of these factors are found or are defective then a person is most likely to become or will be in danger of becoming a career criminal. These traits start early in life or at birth and remains stable and constant. Although in some cases over time the need or want to commit crimes can disappear mainly due to changes in one's life.
Developmental theory looks at the start of delinqency, the length and the termination of delinquency and holds that this process is made up of individual charateritics and social experiences better known as the life course theory. The difference between the two theories is that with the life course theory people are constantly changing and because of this the propensity to commit crimes is not stable, as with latent traits and is not constant. It's believed that people do change with maturity but it's a developmental process. (part 1)

(Part 2)

Edward Jones had been out of jail for about a 1.5 years, hopefully for the last time. He has been in and out of correctional facilities since age 10. The first time he was arrested was because he was vandalizing someone's property. This incident was just the start of his career criminal behavior. His crimes had become so fast and furious that by the time he was 15, he was told by the judge that he would be sent to an adult court the next time was caught breaking the law. Needless to say, his adolescent delinquency carried over into his adulthood life. Edward was born and raised in 5th street projects. Throughtout his entire life he has seen nothing except drug dealers and users, people being shot for no reason, hanging out with the wrong crowds. Living in buildings were the tenents are constantly breaking the elevators and refuse to clean up the stairways or keep it safe to get to their homes. His neighborhood is was so rundown sometimes it felt like walking through a ghost town. His dad was a known career criminal ,who died while in prison, and his mom has seen the insides of the a jail cell from time to time as well. When Edward got out of jail this last time he promised himself that he would change his was. Eventually he found a girlfriend who was just as determined to help him change his life for the better. They ended getting married and they were planning on having children some day. The only problem is that Eddie has started his criminal acts once again, only this time in a new neighborhood. To him the rewards in this neighborhood are well worth the risk. What his wife doesn't know is that when he says he going to work, he's really out stealing from people and busting into cars. I guess in this case you can say that people never really change. Eddie is now sitting behind bars once again for pistol whipping a friend he thought had cheated him out of his share of money they received by snatching a woman's pocketbook. Although Eddie tried to change, he never really shoke being delinquency prone.
